Creating a Segment within Virtuous is considered the third step of creating the overall campaign framework consisting of Campaigns, Communications, and Segments.
By default, a single segment is created with each communication. Because the nature of segmentation is that you can precisely separate groups into distinct sections, you most likely will need to create additional segments. Click into Actions and select Add Segment.
Name (required): This does not have to be a unique name. The Virtuous created segment will use the segment code as the name, but it is able to be edited to follow your business practices.
Code (required): The segment code is the unique value that ties a Gift back to a specific campaign, communication, and channel. This code value should be included on print reply devices and embedded into online donation forms so that it can be entered with other information during gift entry. All segments will have a recommended structure, but can be edited to follow your business practices.
For example: The segment code AR0321DM is made up of the first two letters of the campaign, the starting month for the campaign, the starting year for the campaign, two identifying letters from the campaign communication channel.

Channel - Direct Mail
Description: Any internal supporting details regarding the overall segment goals or message can go here.
Package Code: Can be used to differentiate any specific campaign communication deliverables that are sent to donors.

Fundraiser: Link a segment to a contact record to attribute influenced or fundraised gifts. For example each member of a team raising individual funds for a run/walk.
Receipt Segment: Select an existing receipt segment.
Contact Query: Select a contact query to automatically assign this segment to the contacts associated.
Total Contacts: Manually set and track how many contacts you have in this segment.
Cost Per Contact: Manually set and track the cost per contact for this segment.
