If you have a donor who would like to cancel their active membership (hopefully because they want to distribute their giving impact between more programs or just shift their focus within your mission) it’s simple!
To get started, navigate to the contact record you’re looking to modify and click on the Membership tab to identify their active membership.
If the associated gift HAS NOT yet been received, canceling an active membership is as simple as clicking ‘Edit Membership’ and ‘Expire’. You will get a popup that asks if you’re sure you want to expire the membership. Check the box indicating that you understand and want to proceed and then click ‘Expire Membership’.
Alternatively, you can delete the membership if it was added in error. To do that click ‘Edit Membership’ and ‘Delete’. You will be asked if you’re sure and from there you can click ‘Delete’. If you choose to delete the membership, you will be erasing all records of it on the contact record.
If the associated recurring gift HAS been received you can either cancel the membership and retain the associated gift or cancel the membership and refund the associated gift.
Either way, you will follow the same steps to cancel the membership by clicking ‘Edit Membership’ and ‘Expire’. You will get a popup that asks if you’re sure you want to expire the membership. Check the box indicating that you understand and want to proceed and then click ‘Expire Membership’. If you are retaining the associated gift you’re all done, if you’re refunding the associated gift you’ll also need to reverse the transaction and cancel the recurring gift.
