Q: Why am I receiving a 1099-K from Virtuous / Stripe?
Virtuous partners with Stripe to process payments and is required to file and deliver Form 1099-K for eligible connected accounts that meet IRS/state reporting thresholds. A 1099-K summarizes payment activity processed for the account.
Q: We’re a nonprofit/501(c)(3). Why would we receive a 1099-K?
Even if you are a 501(c)(3), Virtuous may still be required to report eligible payment activity on Form 1099-K when reporting thresholds are met. Receiving a 1099-K does not necessarily mean your organization owes taxes. Please consult your tax advisor for guidance on tax treatment.
Q: What’s the threshold to receive a 1099-K?
For tax year 2025, a 1099-K is generally required for accounts that processed more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions during the year (some states may have different thresholds).
Q: What do I need to do right now?
Please confirm your tax information and delivery preference in Stripe when prompted. Stripe will send an email with a link to confirm your information.
Q: I didn’t receive the Stripe email — what should I do?
Please check your spam/junk folder and search for the subject line: “Get your Virtuous 2025 tax forms faster by enabling e-delivery.” If you still can’t find it, you should be able to perform the tasks here. Otherwise, contact AR@virtuous.org and we’ll help verify the email address on file for your connected account.
Q: What information do I need to confirm?
Stripe requires the connected account’s:
- Confirm legal name
- Confirm mailing address
- Confirm Taxpayer Identification Number (EIN/SSN)
- Choose paperless delivery (e-delivery) or postal mail
This helps ensure the 1099-K is accurate and delivered successfully.
Q: When will I receive my 1099-K?
1099 tax forms are typically finalized in January and must be postmarked by January 31, 2026. If you consent to e-delivery, you’ll be able to access the form in your Stripe Dashboard when it’s available. Otherwise, it will be delivered by postal mail.
Q: Can I get my 1099-K mailed instead of electronic delivery?
Yes — if you do not consent to paperless delivery, Stripe will deliver a paper copy by postal mail using the address on file. If paperless delivery is enabled, you can also manage delivery preferences in your Stripe Dashboard.
Q: My EIN/SSN or legal name is wrong on the form — how do I fix it?
Please update your information in your Stripe Dashboard if prompted. If you believe your legal entity type needs to change (for example, SSN vs EIN), contact AR@virtuous.org for assistance.
Q: I’m locked out of my Stripe Dashboard/ my phone number changed — what do I do?
You can log in to your Stripe Dashboard. If you no longer have access to your phone number, select the “I no longer have access to this phone” option to authenticate via email and update your number. If you’re still blocked, contact our support team.
Q: Can Virtuous resend the Stripe invite email?
In many cases, yes — we can help verify the email address on file and request that the invite be resent. But the easiest way to confirm your information is by going here.
Q: Does the 1099-K mean we owe taxes?
A 1099-K reports payment activity processed for the connected account. It does not necessarily mean taxes are owed. Please consult your tax advisor for guidance specific to your organization.
