In Virtuous, the Campaign structure is a framework that allows your organization to plan, execute, and assess your various fundraising activities. Segments are the most detailed layer of data used to track different audiences. Essentially, a Receipt Segment is a way to track a Gift inspired by a Receipt from a previous Gift. A Receipt Segment is a slightly different use case that this article will cover in detail.

To better illustrate exactly when and how to use a Receipt Segment, let's walk through an example together. From an initial appeal all the way through the Receipt prompting a subsequent Gift and passing that information back to Virtuous.
Initial Gift Appeal
Your organization recently sent out a wave of Facebook posts with specific donation links for Arizona Gives Day. Joseph engaged with one of these posts and sent in a donation through an online Giving Form. Your Segment Code (AR0321SM) was embedded into your online Giving Form. During Gift Processing, the exact source/motivation that pushes Joseph to donate will be reflected in the Marketing Segment (AR0321SM). After the Gift is imported, you'll likely process Receipting to send out thank you communications. You send Joseph a specific Receipt Template made for Arizona Gives Day.
Receipting
In the Receipt you thank him for his $500 donation. When he receives his Receipt and reviews the content, he's reminded of the 10 things he loves about your organization. From the Receipt he decides to set up a monthly Recurring Donation of $50. He selects the "Set Up A New Recurring Gift" button you have embedded in the Email Receipt and completed the Giving Form.
The new Recurring Gift of $50 is now able to come into the Gift and Contact Import Tool with a direct relationship to the Receipt from the original Gift. This means the Segment Code for the second Gift, is the Receipt Segment code from the first Gift.
This is a very specific form of tracking and it's not feasible in every scenario, but this approach will allow you to measure the impact of your Receipts. Are they helping to loop your Donors back in as a valuable form of engagement or not?
Create a Receipt Segment
To create a Receipt Segment, navigate to the specific Campaign it will be associated with. Select "Create a Communication" in the top right corner of the screen.
In the pop-out window, scroll down to the bottom and select the "Communication Type" field to view the available options. Select "Receipt" from the options. Select "Save Communication" after all the appropriate details have been entered.
You'll notice under the "Communication Type" field on the left, this Segment is now categorized as "Receipt".
The auto-created Segment associated with that Communication is now searchable within the Receipt Segment field.
Assign a Receipt Segment to a Gift
Once a Receipt Segment is created, you can also associate it with a Gift manually during Gift Processing. To access this field during Gift Entry, select the blue link available titled "Show All Gift Information" in the Gift and Import Tool.
Begin typing the Receipt Segment Code to see available Receipt Segment Codes and select appropriately.
Receipt Segments can be added to your mail receipts using the merge tag %ReceiptSegmentCode%. This will dynamically print the Receipt Segment on the Receipt. If there is not a Receipt Segment on the Gift, the merge tag will be blank.
