AI email generation allows you to compose personalized, AI-drafted emails one at a time, directly from a Contact record. Powered by Virtuous Momentum, this tool uses donor context—such as giving history and Tags—to generate customized email drafts in seconds. This article explains how to access and use AI email generation and understand your credit usage.
Notes:
AI Email Generation is available to all users with Virtuous CRM+ and no access to Virtuous Momentum.
To track these email touchpoints in your database as Contact Notes, Email Sync must be enabled. Check out this support article to learn more about this feature.

Accessing AI Email Generation
You can generate AI-drafted emails directly from a Contact record within Virtuous CRM+.
- Find the Contact record you would like to email.
-
On the Contact profile, select the compose personalized email icon on the Contact record.
- A dropdown menu will appear with the following options:
- Send a personal email — opens your default mail client using the Email Sync feature.
- Apply a template — allows you to start from an existing email template in CRM+ using the Email Sync feature.
- Compose with Momentum — this is the AI Email Generation feature.
- Select Compose with Momentum to open the AI Email Generation window.
Note: If your subscription includes both Virtuous CRM+ and Virtuous Momentum, selecting this option will re-direct you to the Momentum app to compose the email.
Composing an AI-Generated Email
Once you select Compose with Momentum, a new overlay window will open. This window displays relevant donor context for the selected Contact, including:
- Primary contact name and email address
- Donor context summary
- Giving summary and life-to-date giving totals
- Tags associated with the Contact
This donor context is automatically pulled into the AI tool to inform the email draft.
Note: Check the recipient email address. This will automatically populate with an email address on the Contact record depending on which Individual(s) have one (or more) listed. You can change this out by selecting the email address listed and choosing a different email address.
Writing Your Prompt
To generate an email draft, enter a prompt in the text field that describes what you would like the email to communicate. Be as specific as helpful. For example, you might include:
- The purpose of the email (e.g., a thank-you for a recent Gift)
- Specific details to include (e.g., the Gift amount or a named initiative)
- A call to action (e.g., an invitation to an upcoming event)
Once your prompt is ready, select Generate (the up arrow). The AI will use both your prompt and the donor context to create a personalized email draft, including a subject line.
Refining and Sending Your Email
After the email draft is generated, you have several options:
- Refine the draft: Add additional instructions to the prompt field and select Regenerate to update the draft. Your original prompt will be retained, and the new instruction will be incorporated.
- Copy the draft: Use the copy option to copy the subject line and email body to your clipboard for use in any email client.
- Open in email: Select Open in Email to transfer the email address, subject line, and body directly into your default email client (such as Outlook, Apple Mail, or Gmail). From there, you can review and send the email.
Note: Virtuous CRM+ does not send the email directly. The Open in Email option passes the content to your configured default email client, where you can edit, complete, and send the message. In other words, the system will not send this email to this individual without your human review!
Understanding Credits
Each use of AI email generation (including regeneration) consumes one credit. Credits are visible within the AI email generation window and display as the number used out of the total available.
- Each CRM+ database receives 100 credits per month.
- Credits reset automatically at the end of each month.
